Before you begin

Preparing for citizenship with a complete view

Naturalization involves more than completing Form N-400. USCIS may review time as a permanent resident, travel, taxes, family obligations, background, and the manner in which residence was obtained. A complete review of the record before filing is therefore important.

We calculate continuous residence and physical presence, review extended absences, and analyze answers that may require explanation. We then prepare documentation and practice for the interview, including application questions and, when applicable, the English and civics tests. The goal is for you to understand what to expect and answer clearly.

Frequently asked questions

When may I apply for naturalization?+

Many applicants qualify after five years as permanent residents, or three years in certain marital situations. Additional physical-presence and continuous-residence rules apply.

Can travel outside the country affect my application?+

Yes. The length and frequency of trips may affect continuous residence or physical presence and should be reviewed before filing.

Can I request an exception to the English test?+

Some applicants qualify based on age, years as permanent residents, or a documented disability. Each exception has specific requirements.
